A Personal Letter from the Prime Minister: A Rare Honour

‍Recently, 12-year-old Chinese-Australian tennis prodigy Jeremy Jin received a personal message of congratulations from Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. In his letter, the Prime Minister praised Jeremy as a “talent of the younger generation” and warmly congratulated him on being selected to represent Australia at the 2017 Longines Future Tennis Aces international junior tournament in Paris. Official attention at this level is exceptionally rare in junior sport.

The Journey of a Tennis Family

‍Jeremy was born into a Chinese family with a deep love of tennis. His mother, Chen Ping (Lucy), is President of the International Chinese Tennis Federation, and his father, Jin Hong, has been his long-time training companion and part-time coach. With solid technique and a tenacious will, he won the singles title at the 2016 Bruce Cup junior championships — becoming the first player of Chinese heritage to win in the event’s 77-year history.

Bound for Roland Garros

‍On 26 May, Jeremy will fly with his family to Paris and step onto the clay courts of Roland Garros. As Australia’s sole representative in the U12 category, he will take on top young players from around the world. Australia’s major mainstream media — including Channel 7, Channel 9 and ABC TV — have all run feature stories on him, a mark of how widely his success in tennis has been recognised by mainstream society.
